At its heart, "A Christmas Carol" is a story of redemption, of Ebenezer Scrooge. Here was a man who had lost his family, friends and his faith, however he finds what he has lost, and discovers again the joy of living, love of his fellow man and his faith.

"A Christmas Carol" is also a ghost story. In Dickens brief preface he says:

A Christmas Carol

In Prose

Being a Ghost Story of Christmas.

"I have endeavoured in the Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season or, with me. May it haunt their houses preasantly, and no one wish to lay it."

Their Faithful Friend and Servant,

C.D.

It is that aspect that this years version of A Christmas Carol will be focused on, the Ghost story. Charles Dickens original work not only paints a vivid image of Christmas as a time of joy, family, and giving, but it also brings focus on the plight of humanity. The ignorance, and poverty that trap people into lives of want and servitude. The London Charles Dickens knew was a dark and foreboding place, with the workhouses where children worked like slaves often to pay off family debt. An experience which Dickens himself had as a child when his father was put into debtors prison for a time. They say every cloud has it's silver lining and that is true for this Ghostly tail, but when looking at the silver lining don't forget the dark and mysterious cloud it surrounds. This Christmas season come with Community Players as we travel into the cloud and search through the darkness to find the silver lining in this Ghostly little book.
